Overview

Richard "Rick" Craven is a polarizing figure in the workplace. Known for his abrasive attitude and condescending demeanor, Rick thrives on exerting control over others and positioning himself as the ultimate authority. He has an inflated sense of his own competence and makes decisions based on impulse, often disregarding input from others, which leads to inefficiency and low morale within his team.

Rick Craven is a poor manager whose toxic combination of arrogance, insecurity, and manipulation makes him a villain in the workplace. His leadership fosters an environment of fear and stagnation, where employees feel undervalued and opportunities for growth are routinely crushed under his need for control.

Appearance and Mannerisms

Rick is a stocky man with thinning, slicked-back hair and a sharp, angular face that seems permanently set in a sneer. His cold, calculating eyes are hidden behind rimless glasses, giving him the appearance of someone always analyzing others for weaknesses. He dresses in neatly pressed, overly formal business attire, as if trying to project an image of professionalism that his behavior contradicts.

Personality

Rick is deeply insecure and compensates by belittling others. His management style is authoritative, dismissing ideas and feedback from his team in favor of his own, often flawed, perspectives. While he puts on an air of confidence, Rick is deeply uncomfortable with admitting mistakes and goes to great lengths to cover them up, even if it means throwing others under the bus.

Rick’s ambition knows no bounds, and he’s willing to take credit for the work of his subordinates while blaming them for any failures. His favoritism is blatant, rewarding those who agree with him and punishing anyone who dares to challenge his authority. Behind his sharp, dismissive tone is a man driven by fear of being exposed for his incompetence.

Strengths:

Manipulation: Rick is skilled at manipulating situations to his advantage. He excels at office politics, knowing how to appease upper management while ensuring that any dissent within his team is squashed.
Detail-oriented (in the wrong way): Rick is obsessive about minor, inconsequential details, which he uses to micromanage his team. He will focus on a single, trivial issue to exert control and distract from his lack of understanding of larger, more important matters.

Weaknesses:

Poor Decision-Making: Rick’s inability to listen to others results in poor strategic decisions that often lead to inefficiencies and unnecessary complications. His arrogance prevents him from seeing the bigger picture.
Lack of Empathy: Rick has little concern for the well-being of his team. He’s quick to dismiss personal issues or challenges his employees might face, viewing them as distractions from their work.
Fear of Accountability: Rick avoids responsibility at all costs. When something goes wrong, he’s the first to point fingers at others, rarely acknowledging his own part in any failure.

Professional Life:

Rick’s leadership style is divisive. He surrounds himself with “yes-men” who reinforce his poor decisions, creating an environment where innovation is stifled, and morale is low. Employees under Rick’s management tend to feel demoralized, undervalued, and afraid to speak up. His micromanaging tendencies lead to bottlenecks in workflow, causing delays and inefficiency. Despite these shortcomings, Rick manages to hold onto his position due to his ability to shift blame and take credit for the achievements of his team. He prefers to watch videos online about plant equipment rather than truly understand how they work.

Hobbies:

Rick’s free time is spent in solitary pursuits that reflect his controlling nature. He is an avid chess player, often trying to outsmart others and view people in his life as pieces on a board. He enjoys tinkering with electronics, though not in the way that requires deep knowledge.

Character Dimensions for eLearning

Voice & Tone: Condescending, sharp, and passive aggressive with a sneering quality, as though every statement is a veiled insult or critique. When addressing subordinates, his tone would shift to overly authoritative, speaking as though every word he utters is absolute truth. He’d often use phrases like, “Let’s be realistic,” or “You wouldn’t understand,” to undermine others’ ideas and contributions.
Communication Style: Indirect and manipulative. Rarely provides clear, actionable feedback, instead opting for vague criticism that leaves his team uncertain about how to improve. Prone to making backhanded compliments, such as, “Well, that was better than I expected from you,” or “At least you didn’t mess it up this time.” In meetings, Rick dominates conversations, cutting off others and dismissing ideas that aren’t his own. When delivering instructions, does so in a patronizing, overly simplistic way, as if speaking to people he deems incompetent.
Role in Storylines: Interactions with Rick Craven serve as examples of poor leadership, toxic management practices, and ineffective communication. His presence is used to highlight behaviors to avoid in the workplace and teach learners how to recognize and handle difficult management scenarios.
Interaction with Other Characters:
- Benjamin Burrows: Benjamin’s chaotic yet well-meaning leadership style clashes with Rick’s authoritarian approach. Rick constantly undermines Benjamin’s enthusiasm, dismissing his ideas as “impractical” or “overly ambitious” in a patronizing manner. Rick tears down Benjamin’s plans in meetings, making passive-aggressive remarks that belittle Benjamin's enthusiasm. Learners could be asked to navigate how Benjamin might cope with Rick’s dismissive attitude, and how to maintain morale despite such negativity.
- Maria Pergola: Maria’s strong leadership and empathetic nature is a direct challenge to Rick’s ego. He views her as a threat, subtly undermining her efforts while pretending to cooperate. Learners could see Rick being outwardly polite in meetings with Maria but working behind the scenes to sabotage her initiatives. For instance, Rick might delay action on important tasks that Maria has prioritized or create obstacles that frustrate her team’s progress. Learners could be asked to suggest ways to address them diplomatically.
- Oliver “Olly” Whiskerby: Rick finds Oliver’s scholarly, methodical approach frustrating and overly cautious. His interactions with Olly are full of condescending remarks like, “Not everything needs to be an intellectual debate, Olly,” when discussing technical issues. Learners could be tasked with resolving workplace conflicts between Rick and Oliver, such as when Rick dismisses Olly's well-researched recommendations or ignores his concerns about operational safety. Learners could be prompted to help Olly stand up for his ideas and navigate Rick’s dismissiveness.
- Luis Flores: Rick exploits Luis’s inexperience, treating him as a subordinate with little value to contribute. Rick might be shown piling unnecessary tasks onto Luis while taking credit for any progress he makes. Learners could be prompted to step in and mentor Luis, encouraging him to develop his confidence and find his voice despite Rick’s attempts to minimize his contributions. This would illustrate how to support new employees.
- Penelope "Penny" Pratt: Rick finds Penny’s empathetic and inquisitive nature irritating, viewing her as overly idealistic and naive. He brushes off her curiosity with dismissive remarks like, “We don’t have time for your environmental concerns, Penny.” Learners could observe Penny struggling with Rick’s lack of support and be tasked with helping her channel her empathy and enthusiasm into productive action. This would be an opportunity to demonstrate the value of perseverance in the face of discouragement.
- Derrick Hudson: Rick has a complex relationship with Derrick. On the one hand, Rick admires Derrick’s work ethic and physical presence, but on the other, he feels threatened by Derrick’s charisma and popularity. Rick attempts to exert control over Derrick by assigning him menial tasks or micromanaging his work. Learners could explore how Derrick, with his leadership potential and positivity, might confront Rick’s overbearing nature in a professional manner, standing up for himself while maintaining the respect of his peers.
